How do I know if I have a burst water main or an internal leak?

The simplest test is to turn off every tap and water-using appliance in your home, then check your water meter. If the dial is still moving, water is escaping somewhere. The next question is where. Internal leaks -- from a toilet cistern, a dripping tap, or an appliance connection -- tend to show up inside the house. If you can't find any obvious internal source and your bill has spiked significantly, the main line between the meter and your house is the most likely culprit. Will you have to dig up my driveway or garden?

Absolutely -- and this is actually the most common way burst water mains are discovered. If the leak is draining into a stormwater line or escaping deep underground, there may be no visible surface sign at all.
